Graded Outstanding by the Care Inspectorate 2023

At Hamill Homecare, we have years of experience in catering to those with complex care needs. We help our clients in managing conditions like Motor Neurone disease, Multiple Sclerosis and Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, helping them to live life to the full.

We are trusted by people with complex care needs not just because of our experience, but because we value time, real interpersonal relationships and allowing our clients to live fulfilling lives just the way they like – whatever that looks like. All of this makes us able to provide meaningful care for those with conditions like Motor Neurone Disease.

What is motor neurone disease?

Motor neurone disease (MND) is descibed by the NHS as an uncommon condition that affects the brain and nerves. It causes weakness that gets worse over time. MND is a catchall term which refers to four different types of Motor Neurone Disease. These are;

ALS – Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
PBP – Progressive Bulbar Palsy
PMA – Progressive Muscular Atrophy
PLS – Primary Lateral Sclerosis

Around 5,000 people in the UK have MND at any one time, making it a rare condition. Over time as motor neurons become affected, MND causes weakness, loss of movement and muscle wastage.

How does motor neurone disease affect the nervous system?

Each person is affected by MND differently, making it difficult to diagnose as there are no definitive tests. Due to the complexity of the disease and our respect for our clients as individuals, we tailor each person’s care to them.

Our experienced staff, personal care plans and person-centred approach to care allow us to care for people at home for as long as possible, giving them the independence to live as they choose. This helps us to ensure the best quality of life possible for our clients at each stage of the disease.

Is motor neurone disease curable?

At the present time, there is no known cure for MND. As the condition is progressive, symptoms will worsen over time and unfortunately, MND is life shortening. However, there are many people who live for years with the condition and it’s hard to predict exactly how long someone may live.

As the condition worsens, a person with MND’s care needs will increase. As the disease progresses, things like gripping, speech and swallowing can become difficult. Although the effects of the disease can’t be reversed, Hamill Homecare can offer support with symptoms to ensure the best quality of life possible is achieved.
