What is Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy?
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (or DMD) is a genetic, degenerative condition which affects the muscles in the body, causing progressive weakness. Alterations of a protein called dystrophin, which helps keep muscle cells intact, cause the muscles to weaken over time including the heart and lungs.
When do DMD symptoms show?
The symptoms of DMD usually onset in early childhood, usually between ages 2 and 3. The disease primarily affects boys, but in rare cases it can affect girls. The disease is genetic, meaning it is passed down by a carrier of the gene.
How does DMD affect the body?
DMD firstly attacks the proximal muscles, which means the muscles closest to the body’s core. Usually, the lower proximal muscles are affected before the upper muscles. People who develop DMD can develop a weakness which might show up as a difference in the way they walk, run or jump.
As the disease progresses, it begins to affect the heart and respiratory muscles and can cause a curvature of the spine. These symptoms can make every day difficult for people living with the condition, with many people needing more help as the disease progresses.

Is DMD curable?
There is currently no cure for DMD, although treatment available aims to improve quality of life and improve symptoms. Thanks to medical advances and more research, it’s possible for those with DMD to live well into adulthood.
Treatments like steroid injections, help with breathing physio and occupational therapy and a variety of equipment can all improve the quality of your life if you’re living with DMD.
